Life insurance is a contract under which the Insurer undertakes to pay the contracted capital in the event of the insured's death (death insurance) or survival (whole-of-life insurance).

The sum insured is the amount set out in the policy that will be paid by the insurer should a claim covered by the contracted cover occur. Each cover has an associated sum, indicated in the contract.
